Stains get blocked, not painted over
Water stains and smoke damage do not cover with normal ceiling paint. The yellow or brown mark bleeds back through coat after coat. The fix is a stain-blocking primer over the mark first, which seals it so topcoats stay clean. And with water stains, the leak has to be fixed before any painting, or the stain simply returns.
