Good timber deserves to be seen

Paint hides timber. Stain and varnish celebrate it: the colour deepens, the grain shows through, and the surface still gets protection from sun, rain and daily use. For decks, feature doors and exposed timber, staining and varnishing is often the right answer.

The catch is that stain shows everything, including the preparation. Grey weathered timber, old coating and watermarks all have to come off before the new finish goes on.

What is included

Decks and outdoor timber. Sanded back to clean timber, then stained and sealed. For painted outdoor structures, see pergola and outdoor structure painting.

Timber doors and trims. Front doors and feature trims sanded, stained and clear coated for a rich finish.

Sanding back. Old coating and weathered surface removed so the stain takes evenly.

Durable clear coats. Exterior-grade clears over the stain for protection against sun and weather.

Grey decking

Old grey decking usually comes back well. The grey is weathered surface fibres, and cleaning and sanding remove them to reveal fresh timber underneath. Boards that are split, cupped or soft may need replacing first, and we will tell you honestly which yours needs.

Keeping it up

Stained and oiled timber needs periodic recoating: every year or two in full sun, much longer under cover. Regular recoating is quick and cheap. Letting it go until the timber greys means sanding back from scratch.
